Sox win 1918 World Series
vs.
Negro League tryouts

Sept. 11, 1918: The Red Sox beat the Cubs, 2-1, in Game 6 to capture their fifth World Series -- and last until 2004. Carl Mays (Game 6's winning pitcher) and Babe Ruth each win two games in the series, which is played in September due to wartime restrictions.

April 16, 1945: The Red Sox conduct a Fenway tryout for three Negro League players -- Jackie Robinson, Sam Jethroe and Marvin Williams -- but do not sign any of them.
